Week in Review

The Red Wings played a trio of home games last week, and they kicked it off with a bang. They handed Washington an 8-3 loss on Tuesday (2/27), giving the Caps their second-largest margin of loss of the season. Shane Gostisbehere lit the lamp twice, and Lucas Raymond recorded three points (1 G, 2 A) to lead the offensive charge. Alex Lyon posted 18 saves on 21 shots, giving the Wings their sixth consecutive victory.

 

But the New York Islanders would snap Detroit’s winning streak, skating to a 5-3 win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. Brock Nelson and Olli Maatta scored two goals apiece to top the scoresheet. Alex Lyon made 22 saves on 26 shots faced for Detroit in the defeat.

 

Finally, the Wings hosted the NHL’s first-place Florida Panthers on Thursday. Defender Brandon Montour recorded three points (1 G, 2 A), and Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside all 21 shots faced for his fourth shutout of the campaign in a decisive 4-0 blanking of Detroit.

 

Top Performers

Across the three games last week, Maatta and Gostisbehere led the club in scoring with two goals and an assist each. Dylan Larkin and Joe Veleno joined Raymond and Kane with a goal and two helpers each. For the season, Larkin has resumed the top spot with 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points through 55 games. DeBrincat ranks a close second with 53 points (23 G, 30 A) in 61 games. Raymond has also played in 61 contests and sits third with 17 goals and 34 helpers.

Shane Gostisbehere continues to pace the defensive unit with nine goals and 30 assists for 39 points. Moritz Seider is the second-highest scoring rearguard with seven goals and 25 assists.

Lyon leads Detroit’s netminders with 18 wins across 30 appearances. He carries a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.79 and a save percentage (SV%) of .911. James Reimer has six victories in 18 appearances and sports .907 SV% with a 2.91 GAA.

The team ranks 11th in the NHL on the power play for the season, scoring at a 22.7% clip. Detroit ranks tenth shorthanded, killing penalties at an 80.9% rate.

Standings Update

The Red Wings remain in a playoff position, currently in the first Wild Card slot. With a record of 33-22-6, they’re fourth in the Atlantic Division and sixth in the 16-team Eastern Conference. What’s Ahead

The Wings hit the road for a four-game road trip, three of which will be played this upcoming week. All three of the road games this week are versus Western Conference opponents. On Wednesday, they visit fan-favorite Colorado with puck drop set for 9:30 p.m. (ET) and coverage scheduled on TNT. Friday, they face the Coyotes at Mullett Arena with a 9:00 p.m. (ET) start, and Saturday, they’ll head to Sin City for a 10:00 p.m. (ET) battle against the Golden Knights. Both weekend tilts will be broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit.
