Week in Review

The Red Wings played only one contest this week before the NHL’s All-Star break. They came up just short in a 3-2 overtime defeat at the hands of the Ottawa Senators on the last day of January. Dylan Larkin and Daniel Sprong lit the lamp for the Wings, and Alex Lyon posted 22 saves in the effort.

Top Performers

Larkin ended the month of January with ten goals, making him the first Detroit player to score ten times in a calendar month since MSU alumni Justin Abdelkader struck paydirt ten times in March of 2015. The Red Wings finished the month with a record of 9-2-2 and earned points in four of their last five tilts, which were all played at Little Ceasars Arena.

Scoring leaders for the club are Dylan Larkin (23 G, 24 A) with 47 points, Alex DeBrincat (18 G, 25 A) with 43, and Lucas Raymond (13 G, 28 A) with 41. Shane Gostisbehere tops the rearguards with 32 points from seven tallies and 25 helpers. Alex Lyon leads the trio of goaltenders with 13 wins in 21 appearances. He carries a goals-against average of 2.51 and the NHL’s fourth-best save percentage of .922.

DeBrincat has shined during the All-Star Weekend, logging three goals and three assists, plus scoring a game-winning shootout marker in a semifinal contest. He led Team Matthews over Team Hughes in the semis with two goals and an assist in regulation. Then, he was the lone skater to find twine in the shootout, winning it in the fourth round. In the final game, he scored and picked up a pair of assists to help Team Matthews skate to victory in the 2024 Honda (U.S.)/Rogers (Canada) NHL All-Star Game.

Standings Update and What’s Ahead

The Red Wings hold the fifth spot in the Atlantic Division standings with a record of 26-18-6. They’re tied with Toronto with 58 points and only one point behind the Lightning, who have 59. Toronto and Detroit occupy the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference. They’ll return to action on Saturday, February 10, with a 1:00 p.m. matinee game versus Vancouver with coverage on Bally Sports Detroit.
