What To Watch For

Michigan Rush Offense vs Washington Rush Defense

Over the last three seasons, the Wolverines have established an identity for playing bully ball and pounding the football with their run game. Although their offensive line has not quite been as elite this season as it had been the previous two years they still have a powerful rushing attack. That run game is led by star running back Blake Corrum who last week broke the record for rushing touchdowns in a career that was previously held by Anthony Thomas (1997-2000).

For Washington, the underbelly of their team has been their rush defense. They currently rank 43ed in the country giving up 137 yards a game on the ground. This is a clear advantage for Michigan. Look for the Wolverines to control the ball with their rushing attack and lean on Blake Corrum for long sustained drives. A wild card in this contest is fellow Wolverine running back Donovan Edwards who has had a bit of an underwhelming year but is one of the more dynamic athletes on the Michigan roster and could be due for a breakout game.

Washington Pass Offense vs Michigan Pass Defense

Washington has the top passing offense in all of college football. They are led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr. who was a Heisman Trophy runner-up this season. They also feature three great receivers Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Jalen McMillan. Michigan will counter that attack with the 2nd best pass defense in the country. The Wolverines feature two top-tier corners Will Johnson and Mike Sainristil as well as a ferocious pass rush. Although Michigan doesn’t feature one obvious standout pass rusher they tend to generate pressure through their defensive schemes called by outstanding defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter. That pass rush was very evident last week when Michigan sacked Alabama QB Jalen Milroe five times in the first half.

Prediction:

Going back to 2021 Michigan has built its program to beat Ohio State. A team that at the time featured a prolific passing attack led by an NFL-caliber quarterback and a slew of NFL-talented receivers. That is exactly the type of team Michigan faces tonight. They are literally built for this moment. Michigan should dominate time of possession and keep the powerful Washington offense off the field and limit their possessions. When Washington does have the ball expect them to move it well between the 20’s but to struggle in the red zone once the field shrinks down. Michigan will force the Huskies to settle for field goals while I see the Wolverines being able to finish their drives on offense with touchdowns more often than not. I see Michigan controlling this game throughout with a final score being closer than what the actual game would indicate.
