AEW Dynamite Review 2/7/2024

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite took place from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The show was headlined by a number 1 contenders match between Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page.

#1 Contender Match: Swerve Strickland vs Hangman Adam Page

Result: A 30-minute time limit Draw. In a tremendous back-and-forth match, Swerve Strickland gained the upper hand late in the matchup and had Hangman Page pinned, but just before referee Paul Turner’s hand could hit the mat a third time, the bell rang. AEW ring announcer Justin Roberts announced that time had expired, and this match was declared a draw. Swerve then grabbed a microphone and urged Hangman to agree to five more minutes, but Hangman declined. As Hangman was headed up the ramp, announcer Tony Schiavone then addressed the crowd, saying he was given the word from Tony Khan that there are now two #1 contenders for the World Title and at the Revolution PPV, it will now be a three-way match between champion Samoa Joe, Swerve Strickland, and Hangman Page.

Thoughts: This was a fantastic contest and definitely the biggest must-see match so far this week in Pro Wrestling. Swerve and Hangman have had an incredible feud, and it was thought this feud might end tonight. It’s great to see that is not the case, and these two will continue their rivalry at Revolution in a three-way match for the World Title with current AEW Champ Samoa Joe.

Backstage Interview: AEW Champion Samoa Joe

Title Eliminator Match: “Timeless” Toni Storm (C) vs Red Velvet

Result: Toni Storm Def. Red Velvet via Pinfall

Thoughts: There is not too much to add here other than it was nice to see the #1 contender for Storm’s world title, Deonna Purrazzo, provide guest commentary for the match to help build towards Storm and Purrazzo at Revolution.

Six-Man Tag Match: Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli) vs CMLL (Hechicero, Volador JR., Máscara Dorada)

Result: Blackpool Combat Def. CMLL by Pinfall (Claudio Castagnoli on Hechicero)

Thoughts: This match continues the feud between the BCC and CMLL. Although this is a fun little program, I can’t help but think that Bryan Danielson should be featured in more important storylines if this is indeed going to be his last year as an active wrestler.

Backstage Segment: Undisputed Kingdom attack Chuck Taylor

Tony Khan Major Announcement

Thoughts: This event in Boston is heavily rumored to showcase the debut of Mercedes Mone, aka Sasha Banks, in AEW.

Singles Match: Chris Jericho vs Konosuke Takeshita

Result: Konosuke Takeshita Def. Chris Jericho via submission

After interference from Don Callis, including spiking Jericho in the forehead with a screwdriver, Takeshita was able to lock on the Walls of Jericho and force him to tap out.

Thoughts: I am glad to see Takeshita get the win here, even if it did require interference. Takeshita is one of AEW’s many young stars, and a win over the legend Chis Jericho should mean bigger and better things for “The Alpha.”

AEW Tag Title Match (Tornado Tag Rules): Ricky Starks and Big Bill vs Sting and Darby Allin

Result: **NEW CHAMPIONS** Sting and Darby Allin Def. Ricky Starks and Big Bill

Thoughts: Sting’s final match at Revolution has been rumored to be a tag match against The Young Bucks for a while. The final segment of tonight’s show is a clear indication that is the direction. Having Sting and Darby win the tag belts, followed by an attack from the Bucks, begins Sting’s final feud in his storied career. AEW continues to book Sting’s final run in pro wrestling exceptionally, with tonight being one of the best examples.
